Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, inspected Ulaanqab in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, calling for coordinating high quality development with high level environmental protection as part of China's push on ecological conservation and green development.

Touring wetland conservation efforts

During the October 16 visit, Xi toured wetland conservation work in the area. He called for an integrated, systemic approach to protecting mountains, rivers, forests, farmland, lakes, grasslands and deserts together, while safeguarding wetland ecosystems, environmental quality and biodiversity. It was his first visit to Inner Mongolia since June 2023.

Checking in on the “East Data, West Computing” project

Xi also reviewed the East Data, West Computing megaproject, a national initiative that coordinates computing capacity between eastern and western China and forms part of the country's broader “six networks,” covering water, power, computing, telecommunications, urban pipelines and logistics. Inner Mongolia generated more than 270 billion kilowatt hours of renewable electricity in 2025, officials said, with local data centers now drawing more than 85 percent of their power from green sources and total computing capacity reaching 345,000 PFlops.

Pushing farmer and herder incomes

On agriculture, Xi encouraged stronger links between production and sales to help raise incomes for local farmers and herders.

Inner Mongolia's broader role

Xi reaffirmed Inner Mongolia's standing as a key ecological barrier for northern China, as well as a major energy and strategic resource base, an agricultural production hub, and a gateway for the country's opening toward the north.
