On the long road to controllable nuclear fusion, China's research into an “artificial sun” is delivering unexpected real-world returns. Scientists describe the process as “laying eggs along the way”: in the pursuit of an ultimate energy source, a series of technological breakthroughs have already been turned into practical innovations, and some of them can even save lives.
Laying eggs along the way
Led by the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) in Anhui province, China's fusion research keeps advancing in superconductivity, strong magnetic fields, precision control and materials. The technologies developed for fusion do not have to wait until fusion power is finally realized before they prove useful elsewhere.
Derived applications have already spread in several directions: medical equipment for precise cancer treatment, inspection of aircraft engines, and high-end fields such as chip manufacturing. In other words, before it lights up the future of energy, the artificial sun is already giving off light and heat in the real world.
