The C919, China's homegrown large passenger aircraft, has flown its first scheduled international commercial route. The Beijing-to-Ulan Bator service, operated by Air China, marks a step for the C919 from domestic operations into the international market. Until now, the narrowbody jet developed by COMAC had mainly flown commercially within China.
A first step across borders
The Beijing-Ulan Bator route runs once a day. The outbound flight departs Beijing at about 3 pm and arrives in Ulan Bator at 4:58 pm local time, while the return leaves at 7:04 pm local time and reaches Beijing at 8:49 pm. The C919 can carry 158 to 192 passengers, with a range of about 4,075 to 5,555 kilometers. Before entering regular international service, it had conducted demonstration flights and airport compatibility tests in 2024 in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia.
From certification to scaled operations
The C919 received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China in September 2022, and entered commercial service in May 2023 with China Eastern Airlines. Air China and China Southern Airlines have since joined the ranks of operators. As of Monday, the C919 had opened 57 routes at home, serving 25 cities and carrying more than 7.5 million passengers in total.
Safety and the market
For the pilots, the bottom line of flying never changes. An Air China captain who moved to the C919 fleet in 2024 said that safety margins and procedures do not change when demand is higher, and that every day relies on the same rules. That steadiness is the precondition for the new model to reach broader markets.
Lin Zhijie, a civil aviation analyst, said the C919 will certainly fly to more countries, and that operating reliably at demanding airports and in mature aviation markets says more than simply flying farther. As the fleet grows, the support system around maintenance, spare parts and training is developing in step.
From domestic routes to cross-border flights, from demonstration flights to regular commercial service, each step of the C919 is a process of accumulating experience and earning trust for China's commercial aircraft industry. This route to Ulan Bator may be only a beginning.
