King Abdullah II of Jordan made a state visit to China on Monday, holding talks with President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The trip marks the Jordanian monarch's latest visit to China in recent years and is the latest in a string of state visits from the Middle East that Beijing has hosted this year.
A relationship built on decades of ties
China and Jordan established diplomatic relations nearly five decades ago and have kept up long running cooperation in energy, infrastructure and education, with Jordan also taking part in the Belt and Road Initiative. As one of the more stable actors in a turbulent region, Jordan has long played the role of mediator in Middle East affairs, which means its engagement with China tends to be read against the backdrop of the wider regional diplomatic picture rather than as a purely bilateral matter.
