# For electric vehicles, the second half is about cost and service

> With range and acceleration no longer differentiators, supply chain efficiency and after-sales networks decide who succeeds.

Early competition among electric vehicles concentrated on easily quantified figures such as range and acceleration. As the technology matured, the marginal value of those numbers fell and buyers started looking elsewhere.

What now moves a purchase decision is charging convenience, how stable the software feels and how well the car holds its value. None of those is set by a single component. Each is the output of how well the whole system runs.

## Cost control comes from integration and scale

Batteries account for a large share of vehicle cost, so battery strategy and procurement shape the final price significantly. Some manufacturers develop cells in-house to control cost, others lock in supply through long-term agreements, and each path carries its own exposure.

Scale matters just as much. Research, tooling and software are essentially fixed costs, so the more units sold, the less each one carries. That leaves mid-sized manufacturers in the hardest position, lacking both the pricing power of a niche brand and the cost base of a leader.

## Service and residual value build the reputation

Cars stay on the road for a decade or more, which brings service networks and parts availability into the buyer's view. Repair waiting times, insurance costs and how a degraded battery gets handled all feed into used vehicle values.

Residual value then feeds back into new car pricing and whether leasing works at all. In other words, what a company invests in service eventually shows up in the financial characteristics of its product.
