Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa is on a state visit to China from August 18 to 23, his first as head of state and his second trip to the country in that capacity. President Xi Jinping held talks with him in Beijing and attended a welcoming ceremony for the visit.

## A decade of partnership

The visit coincides with the 10th anniversary of the China-Ecuador comprehensive strategic partnership. Bilateral trade in the first half of 2026 reached 9.831 billion US dollars, up 20.1 percent year on year, officials said. The China-Ecuador free trade agreement, which took effect on May 1, 2024, is seen as one of the drivers of that growth, and China remains the largest market for Ecuador's non-oil exports.

## Cooperation across sectors

During the talks, the two sides discussed cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative on energy and infrastructure, green industries and renewable energy, artificial intelligence and the digital economy, as well as healthcare, poverty reduction, disaster prevention, education, culture, and youth and sports exchanges. Xi said China is ready to work with Ecuador to take bilateral relations to new heights, while Noboa said the relationship has entered a new stage that is delivering tangible benefits for both peoples.

During the visit, the two governments signed a number of cooperation documents covering green industries, trade, the digital economy and people's livelihoods. For the South American country, the state visit serves both as a review of a decade of partnership and, in the view of many observers, a signal of deepening trade and investment ties ahead.
