President Xi Jinping met visiting Slovak President Peter Pellegrini at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on July 28, and the two exchanged views on China-Slovakia relations and issues of common concern. Xi said China stands ready to join hands with Slovakia in forging a strategic partnership defined by mutual respect, equality, stability and durability.

Xi said mutual respect and a commitment to friendship are the foundation for developing ties between the two countries. He spoke positively of Slovakia's adherence to the one-China principle and said China is willing to expand cooperation in clean energy, the digital economy, robotics and artificial intelligence, and to widen exchanges in culture, sports, tourism and among young people.

## Expanding practical cooperation

Pellegrini said Slovakia looks forward to more results in cooperation with China in economy and trade, artificial intelligence, the digital economy, robotics and new energy. Both sides said they would uphold multilateralism within the United Nations framework and support the stable development of the international system.

During the meeting the two also exchanged views on China-EU relations. Analysts say the visit continues a tradition of keeping channels open between China and Central and Eastern European countries, while opening room for cooperation in emerging industries.

In recent years, emerging fields such as clean energy, the digital economy and artificial intelligence have become new growth points for practical cooperation between China and European countries. For a Central and Eastern European country like Slovakia, how to expand mutually beneficial cooperation with China while keeping its commitments within the EU is a real balance to strike.
