# China's Green Energy Buildout Outpaced the Grid. Can AI Help Close the Gap

Speaking at the Fortune Leaders Forum in Macau on Sept. 8, Youyuan Huang, executive vice chairman of BTR New Material Group, the world's largest maker of battery anode materials, said China's power grid remains strong and stable overall, but noted that the pace of new renewable energy installations in recent years has clearly outrun what the grid can actually absorb. His comments echo a debate that has been gaining traction in the industry over whether China's green energy capacity has become structurally oversized.

## A buildout that has outpaced the grid

Over the past few years, China has repeatedly set new records for annual solar and wind installations, with manufacturing capacity for the underlying equipment expanding at an equally striking pace. But the build out of grid infrastructure, energy storage and cross regional transmission capacity has often struggled to keep up, leaving some regions with curtailment problems, where grid operators are forced to limit how much solar or wind power can be fed into the system during periods of low demand or transmission bottlenecks. Industry observers say this mismatch between supply and demand is a key reason renewable equipment utilization rates have come under pressure and profit margins have been squeezed across the sector.

## Where AI could help

A growing number of industry figures are looking to artificial intelligence as a possible way to ease the bind, from two directions. On one hand, the data centers that power AI training and inference are themselves a fast growing source of electricity demand, and locating more of them in regions rich in renewable capacity could help absorb surplus green power closer to where it is generated. On the other, using AI for grid load forecasting, storage dispatch and virtual power plant management could improve the grid's ability to absorb intermittent renewable output and cut down on curtailment. Several analysts argue that if both approaches advance together, they could gradually turn today's overcapacity into infrastructure that underpins the next stage of the energy transition.
